Conversations
The inquiry in these works focuses on the relationship between written language, the visualization of experience, and the stigma of aging women in western society. What does this shift away from fetishized youth mean? What exactly expires in women as they mature? What has expired/, shifted, evolved in me as I age? How can I use this shift to reflect on my own experiences, view them in a new light, and use them to inform my process moving forward?
This body of work begins by exploring a primary marker of woman's worth: menstruation. By focusing on color, texture, and viscosity, how can this bodily process be isolated from the female body, take on a different context, and circumvent stigma assigned to it? Is this a pheasible outcome? This project begins with reflection on sketchbooks, journals, and other refuse from various points of my life thusfar. Through the excavation of these pieces I came to find a relationship between my visual and written expression.This resulted in the eventual merging of these two processes, turning the written language into layered, almost runic forms, that merge the linear written experience into the holistic visual one. Ultimately this synthesis opens possibility for my work moving forward.
